Scooby Doo, Where Are You?

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? first aired at the end of the 1960's, but in one form or another, and in no less than twelve different titles, the cowardly canine and his hipster pals would keep entertaining kids for over fifteen years.

SDWAY concerned the mystery-solving adventures of a Great Dane named Scooby-Doo and his friends - hippie Shaggy, lantern-jawed Freddy, curvacious redhead Daphne, and brainy Velma (whom it was later speculated to be a lesbian). They traveled America in their psychedelically- painted van, the Mystery Machine, and solved mysteries for people. The standard plot was that the gang would arrive late in night in some small, remote town being terrorized by unxplained, horrifying creatures (ghostly pirates, zombies, walking skeletons) and they would investigate, inevitably uncovering some ordinary crook as the fiend, in disguise - leading the unrepentant felon to comment, "And I would have gotten away with it, too, if it hadn't been for you meddling kids!" Despite his reluctance, Scooby could always be counted on to sniff out the supernatural, even if he did have to be bribed with treats called 'Scooby snacks,' which worked like catnip upon him and his stoner friend Shaggy.

The show was instantly successful with kids; the next year featured both new and rerun episodes. The 1978-79 season would see new episodes again under the same title. Sooner, though, it would return for the 1972-73 season under a new title, The New Scooby-Doo Comedy Movies. A feature film was made of the gang's adventures in 2002, with a computer-animated Scooby and Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, the role he was born to play.
