CBS Children's Film Festival
CBS - Premiered 2-5-67
The CBS Children's Film Festival was an hour-long program appearing sporadically beginning in 1967, until it joined the early-Saturday-
afteroon schedule in 1971. The hosts were Kukla, Fran, and Ollie, aka 'the Kuklapolitan Players' - the puppets Kukla ('doll' in Russian) and Ollie, created and
performed by Burr Tillstrom, and Fran Allison, who had been working together as early as 1948 (the original puppet pair had appeared
even earlier, in 1939). What set the CBSCFF apart from other children's anthology shows was that it featured dubbed, edited versions
of foreign films suitable for children. The show ran in this format until 1977, when it was reduced to the half-hour
CBS Saturday Film Festival, without the charming hosts. It continued to air irregularly until 1984.
I'm ashamed of it now, but in its later years I hardly watched the show, preferring some other animated piece of crap. But when I was
younger, I had been fascinated by some of the movies introduced by Fran and her little costars, including (as best as I can remember)
The Magnificent 6-1/2 and The Johnstown Monster. The fact that they were foreign films added a bit of interest to those of us who
easily gravitated toward animation and superheroes. It would be wonderful if seasons of this show could someday appear on DVD, but
alas - the cost involved in getting reprint rights for all of the different films from different nations would almost certainly prove
to be prohibitive.
